Solution
Here I explored the world of staged photography. With the idea of a photo being “staged,” as the photographer, I put myself in a position to look for the drama, or the most interesting details, in the subject that I was photographing. This informed both the unifying concept and the shooting location for this image set. The style of macro photography allowed me to get much closer to the subject and see the hidden treasures that are usually obscured from our sight. Additionally, the plants used as the subject matter for these images were all found in the backyard of my house. The idea of looking for hidden treasure translated for both the compositions of these macro images as well as finding beauty in a location as simple as my own backyard.
Design Challenge
You are being asked to stage a series of photographs. Rather than going out and finding a photograph you will be asked to preconceive an image, and then execute what is needed to create that image. This will require an initial phase of coming up with ideas, which may include drawing, research, daydreaming, etc.
The next phase will be the creation of a first round of images. These may become your final images or simply serve as rough drafts. Experiment with lenses, lighting, modeling, sets, locations. After initial images are shot, respond to them, study them, make adjustments and reshoot if necessary.
Finally, you'll need to do any editing, printing, mounting, and any other considerations needed to create work to be presented exactly how you would wish it to be in a professional setting. The final set of images does not necessarily need to be narrative or even representational in any way. Poetic, emotional driven, non-representational, and purely formal work can still be staged.
